Chapter 9: In a village, a young boy inquires on the location of the village Hwamuchon. After learning of the distance that the boy traveled, the villagers send him off with a map and food.

The boy treks continuously over the mountains but at night, he is unable to find a path and gets lost. Then he sees a light and he heads in its direction eventually stumbling upon an abandoned house where he spends the night.

In the morning, he continues his journey but not without getting lost along the way. As starvation sets in, the boy stumbles upon a dead pheasant. He cooks the pheasant on a fire made using a technique taught to him by uncle "Chuldo" and continues on after having his fill.

Later, the boy hilariously meets a hunter as the former relieves himself, and after a brief conversation, the hunter expresses shock that the boy was able to traverse through such dangerous areas swarming with vipers. The hunter then notices his prey and chases after it while the boy resumes his journey. Deep inside the forest, the hunter finishes off the deer and as he prepares to carry his game home, the hunter notices that the forest is full of dead vipers, revealing that someone is watching over and protecting the young boy.

Elsewhere, the boy approaches and informs a sleeping old man that the latter's fishing pole has caught onto a fish. Recognizing the young boy from the stories of passersby, the old man offers to take the boy across the river to save time. After being taken across the river, the boy thanks the old man and continues on.

After three days of walking due to the sinking of the boat, the old man eventually returns to his pier and wonders if his catch is still alive. He reaches into his fishing basket and instead of finding fish, he pulls out a solid gold bar...
