History
Origins
The Dan was first created by an unnamed blue-eyed sorcerer hailing from the edge of the earth to the West. At some point, he gave the stone away to Okcheonbi the Grand Prelate of the Asura Blood Sect.[3]
Okcheonbi
By implanting the Dan inside himself, Okcheonbi was able to heal his body which was rotting away like a corpse, allowing him to achieve of his dream of invading the Middle Kingdom. However since the Dan's power amplified over time, he soon became worried that it would exceed his power and bring destruction upon the world by opening the gates of the "other-realms". It was during the Asura Blood Sect's invasion where that worry was starting to materialize so he had to reserve power to maintain control over the exploding power of the Dan while clashing with Goo Hwi and Yongbi on the battlefield. Eventually, the war ended with the Blood Sect's defeat and Okcheonbi went into hibernation in hiding.
After a few decades, Okcheonbi was found by Hwan Sa who introduced himself as the disciple of the blue-eyed sorcerer and offered to remove the Dan and destroy it. The Grand Prelate, desperate to rid of it, accepted. However, after Hwan Sa extracted the Dan in a place known as the Crouching Devil Palace, Okcheonbi realized that he was tricked but it was too late and he ended up being held captive there while the Dan remained in Hwan Sa's grasp. [4][3]
Hwan Sa
It is unclear what Hwan Sa did with the Dan and the information known is untrustworthy since it came from flashbacks where he was conversing with Hyeol Bi and Hwan Sa wasn't very honest with his colleague. It is most likely that for decades, Hwan Sa used the Dan along with the notes left behind by the blue-eyed sorcerer to create and perfect another Dan for Hyeol Bi. It is also known that he once intended to fulfill his dream of opening the door to the "other-realms" using the Heavenly Destroyer but that dream was shattered when he died.[4]
However, after finding out that Dokgo Ryong raised a fifth disciple who inherited all his magnificent power, he focused his efforts on achieving his dream through Gang Ryong. He commanded the River Dragon Armour to accompany the young gosu and manipulate him to his will. He also had the armour implant the original Dan into Gang most likely when it first came to him.[1]
Gang Ryong
The Dan laid dormant inside Gang Ryong and Hwan Sa commanded the River Dragon Armour to stop Gang from engaging Hyeol Bi in battle fearing that the young man would fall to him before the Dan awakens but the armour was ultimately unsuccessful. Then meeting up at Revived Heavenly Destruction Sect's headquarters for another clash, Gang initially dominated Hyeol Bi but not for long after the latter received a power boost and overpowered the former.[5] Now with Gang's outlook looking grim, the River Dragon Armour told him to unleash the Dan and harness its powers. Gang Ryong finally gave in and it granted him a much needed power boost to take on Hyeol Bi.[1][4]
Hwan Sa's Version
The Dan in the possession of Hyeol Bi is said to be the result of researching and improving upon the original Dan by Hwan Sa. It is originally sealed and awakens once Hyeol Bi is killed by Gang Ryong. In it's sealed state it did not show any of its unique powers such as healing, however, after awakening, it facilitates the revival process for Hyeol Bi and allows him to go through Demonic Resurrection.[6] This shows it has the same properties as the original Dan after it has awakened such as healing its user and allowing them to make formless ki visible, as well as materialize and destroy objects with it.[4] The Spirit Lord himself mentions that he spent decades researching the secret codices left by the blue-eyed sorcerer and to locate the Grand Prelate to retrieve the original Dan. It then took him another few decades to go through trial and error to perfect the second Dan. The Dan created by Hwan Sa is a crystal of similar size to the original but red in colour instead of blue. It has sharp tips on both ends but instead of having a columnar body like the original, this Dan's body is a thin spiral.[1][4]
Notes & Trivia
- The Dan is similar to the Lightning God's Blue Dragon Sword in that they are both paranormal items that will consume their user if they are unable to control it.
- Gang Ryong described the process of harnessing the Dan's power as a terrible feeling like his body was being torn apart similar to going through metamorphosis.[4]
- Both users of the Dan, Hyeol Bi and Okcheonbi suppressed the overwhelming power of the Dan, as they both felt it was an uncontrollable power. Hyeol Bi's hand turns crimson and shakes as if it is not under his control, he is also seen hallucinating, his hand turning into that of a Demon's and chooses to suppress the phenomenon. Hyeol Bi later states as he unleashed the Dan's power "fearing that I may not be able to control it, I only thought about suppressing this explosive power".[7] [8]
