Yeonhwa (연화, Yeonhwa) is Heukweol's wife and currently one of the hermits of the Sage Forest.

She was once a servant of the Secret Sword School (비도문, Bidomun) led by Lord Moonjoo but when Heukweol was banished, she was sent alongside him as his lifelong attendant and companion. They later returned to aid the faction in their hunt for Yongbi. Even though she called Heukweol "big brother", they were not actually siblings but master and servant. Many years later, she married Heukweol.[1]

Appearance & Personality[]

In the past, Yeonhwa was a young lady with long flowing black hair that is tied into a ponytail. She also had long side bangs and several strands hanging over her forehead. She wore shabby clothing indicating her life as a vagabond.

Several decades later, she has aged significantly with her once black hair now completely white but has retained her short stature. Her hair is tied into a bun with long hair flowing from it and carries a bag on her back. She also wears a scarf and the standard clothing of the time.

She appears to be a very optimistic individual and always show a lot of enthusiasm. Yeonhwa is extremely loyal to Heukweol, exclaiming that serving him is her purpose on earth. She is even willing to clash with martial artists way above her level so that the young master can escape from danger.

In her old age, Yeonhwa is happily married to Heukweol, although she bickers with him and teases him over his grumpy tendencies. She takes a liking to Doh Gyeom and doesn't mind him accompanying them.

History[]

In her childhood, Yeonhwa served the Moonjoo family. Because of her talents, Lord Moonjoo had her memorize and interpret many martial art styles, even the secretive Lu Family's Spear Style of the Grand General's Command. When Lord Moonjoo exiled his blind and illegitimate son Heukweol, he sent Yeonhwa along with him as a servant out of pity for Heukweol's mother.[2]

As Yeonhwa and Heukweol traveled across the land, she took care of him and they bonded. Heukweol eventually told her to call him big brother instead of young master. One night, Heukweol found out about her talents and had her teach him the Lu Family's Spear Style.[2]

At some point, she and Heukweol returned to the Secret Sword School to aid them in their hunt for Yongbi. They set up an entire fake town called "Hongchunhyang" to be the battleground, and Heukweol memorized the entire layout.[3]

Yongbi the Invincible - A Side Story[]

Volume 3[]

Posing as a poor peddler, she waited at the town of Hongchunhyang for Yongbi, and sold a flower to him as he made his way to an inn. At night, after Yongbi defeated the many assassins that attacked him, Heukweol entered the fray and Yeonhwa observed them from a rooftop. As Heukweol and Yongbi fought, she assisted the former with a flute, giving him orders and informing him of Yongbi's movements. Jang Woon also showed up beside her and they had a short conversation about the situation. As the fight progressed, Yongbi eventually broke Heukweol's arm and downed him. With Heukweol refusing to keep his promise, Yongbi prepared to execute him, prompting Yeonhwa to intervene. She dropped down and unleashed a barrage of throwing knives at Yongbi, forcing him to take cover in a nearby building. Yeonhwa yelled at Heukweol to escape, noting that she would fight Yongbi before rushing into the building after him while Heukweol unsuccessfully tried to stop her from doing so.

Inside the building, she clashed with Yongbi but was easily subdued. When Heukweol entered the building, Yongbi threatened to execute her, to which Heukweol stated that Yeonhwa wasn't an assassin of the Secret Sword School and offered his own head instead. Yongbi then drew his sword, noting that Heukweol's word was worthless and adds that he intended to give both of them quick and painless deaths. At that, Heukweol yielded and gave Yongbi the information he wanted.

Between the events of Yongbi the Invincible - A Side Story and Gosu (The Master)...

Yeonhwa assisted Heukweol in the Old Murim Alliance's war against the Asura Blood Sect and they slaughtered many of their warriors. Eventually, the long and deadly war ended with a Pyrrhic Victory for the Alliance, and she settled down in the Sage Forest. At some point, Yeonhwa and Heuweol married one other.[4]

Gosu (The Master)[]

While returning to the Sage Forest, Yeonhwa was startled by a falling tree. Doh Gyeom apologized to her for collapsing the tree and left. However, Heukweol arrived and challenged Doh Gyeom despite Yeonhwa's protests. Heukweol defeated Doh Gyeom with one blow and Yeonhwa nursed the young man. Impressed by Heukweol's martial arts, Doh Gyeom accompanied the couple in the hopes of improving his own martial arts. Under Yeonhwa's instructions, Doh Gyeom saw improvement in his martial arts, which only strengthened his resolve to continue following the couple.
