Personality[]

He is a wise and knowledgeable man who is also often laid back and playful. When the situation calls for it, he can be stern and serious as seen when he attempted to persuade Sanggwan Chaek to return to the murim and face his crimes.[1] Even though he is willing to mercilessly slaughter those who oppose him, Hyeon Jae-Yang has a caring and forgiving side. He showed regret when he accidentally killed Sanggwan Chaek and withdrew his ki halfway through a powerful technique when facing his disciple's possessed body.

Hyeon Jae-Yang was well known to have such a great wanderlust that he's been to just about every corner of the continent,[2] and he also likes to befriend heroes from all around the world.[3] Being the drinking buddy of the Murim High Lord,[4] and having wished that the Golden Castle was full of ripe, rich wine instead of treasures, Hyeon Jae-Yang has a significant love for drinking.[5]

History[]

In his youth, he studied together with Hong Ye-Mong's grandfather. Many years later, he met Hong Ye-Mong when she was just a small child but never met again after that meeting.[6]

At some point in his life, Hyeon Jae-Yang and his subordinates journeyed to the westernmost region of the Land of Chu near the Muhae Valley and slaughtered the remnant followers of Go Hyeop. After a survivor attempted to kill him, Hyeon Jae-Yang took the young boy in as a disciple and incited him to get stronger so that he could take revenge.[1]

Hyeon Jae-Yang also fought Goo Hwi some time before the story of Yongbi the Invincible, most likely during the conflict between the Black Snake and the Cheonwoong Faction.[7]

Plot[]

Yongbi the Invincible[]

Volume 6[]

Accompanying a Young Lady, they were seen making their way somewhere. Then resting on the side of the road, Yongbi's party suddenly passed by him. He flicked Yongbi a single nyang for a ride, noting his legs were too sore to walk, and Yongbi refused. However, Yongbi changed his mind and allowed Hyeon Jae-Yang to accompany him after being given a large sum of money.

As they traveled, Hyeon Jae-Yang offered Yongbi enormous amounts of money to reveal information about himself and his entourage to which Yongbi readily accepted due to his extreme lust for money. He even goes as far as revealing the metaphorical description of the Golden Castle's location. At that, Sohsoh ousted Hyeon Jae-Yang as the Cheonwoong Faction's master and attempted to drive him out. Then, Hyeon Jae-Yang revealed that he knew the location that the metaphorical description described having been there before, adding that it was used by natives who lived around the Muhae Valley when they described that area. In addition, Hyeon Jae-Yang mentioned that Sanggwan Chaek knew the location as well to Yongbi and Sohsoh's concern.

Volume 7[]

His party then entered and journeyed through the Muhae Valley. Some time later, Hyeon Jae-Yang was setting up a fire when he suddenly heard a rupturing sound, and mused about it. With Hyeon Jae-Yang distracted, the fire he was tending started going out and Yongbi tapped him on the shoulder. This caused Hyeong Jae-Yang to lose his footing and fall face-first in to the fire, burning his beard.

Volume 8[]

Taking a nap on the cart, Hyeon Jae-Yang was jolted awake by Sohsoh punishing Ilgak for his antics. With Yul Mugi falling ill due to their environment, Hyeon Jae-Yang decided to infuse Yul Mugi with some of his ki at Ilgak's suggestion.

Then as an earthquake started breaking up the ground beneath them, Hyeon Jae-Yang and his party abandoned their cart and sought refuge in the trees.

As the group waited out the earthquake, Sohsoh noticed a signal from the Red Bloods and wandered off. Hyeon Jae-Yang wandered off as well, using exhaustion as an excuse. Sohsoh and the Red Bloods agents conversed and commanded them to hide before Hyeon Jae-Yang arrived. Hyeon Jae-Yang approached Sohsoh and revealed that he overheard their conversation and now knew that she was actually the mistress of the Red Bloods. After Hyeon Jae-Yang accused her of being dubious, Sohsoh fired back by revealing that Sanggwan Chaek was the one responsible for bringing the demonists to the Middle Kingdom to begin with.

Volume 9[]

Hyeon Jae-Yang responded to Hong Ye-Mong's accusation of Sanggwan Chaek's involvement with the Asura Blood Sect with anger, adding that he would find the truth. He then promised retribution if Hong Ye-Mong was lying and she welcomed it.

As Hyeon Jae-Yang returned to the rest of the group, he felt embarrassment for teasing Hong Ye-Mong since he was actually quite fond of her having met her when she was a child, and noted that there was no way she would have lied to him. He eventually met up with with his companion and informed her that they need to go find Sanggwan Chaek.

Volume 10[]

Hyeon Jae-Yang and the Young Lady's trek were delayed due to the madmen they encountered. The young lady easily dealt with them but got tired, to which Hyeon Jae-Yang displayed his disappointment in passing down his Drunken Fist Style to someone who couldn't hold their liquor. Hyeon Jae-Yang told the young lady to rest while he goes deal with the enemies. Suddenly, three dead warriors came flying out of the fog and out came two Cheonwoong Faction members, Jin Paechu and Ga Mugwang. Sitting down, Jin Paechu divulged the results of his investigation to Hyeon Jae-Yang and the latter came to the conclusion that Sanggwan Chaek was working with the demonists.

Volume 11[]

Hyeon Jae-Yang was conversing with Jin Paechu and Ga Mugwang when he sensed the clash between Goo Hwi and Yongbi and realized that the Heaven Ravager King was in the Muhae Valley. He feared that Goo Hwi may be after the Golden Castle and combined with the Murim Alliance's scheming ways, it may culminate into an unfavorable situation. Then Hyeon Jae-Yang ordered the faction members to return to their headquarters while he hurried off to find Sanggwan Chaek.

Later underground, Hyeon Jae-Yang and the Young Lady reached near the core of the Muhae Valley. Suddenly a wall nearby exploded and out came Goo Hwi. They expressed surprise at seeing the other in the Muhae Valley and then conversed with clear animosity towards each other. After talking a bit about the events at the Hweyang villa, Hyeon Jae-Yang and the Young Lady left to continue looking for Sanggwan Chaek. As they traveled through the underground passages, Hyeon Jae-Yang told her about the rumours of a monster that protected the Muhae Valley, adding that it was just most likely Go Hyeop, a grand villain who went missing in the valley fifty years ago. Then Goo Hwi joined up with them since he was heading in the same direction.

Traversing along the underground passages, Hyeon Jae-Yang sensed the clash between Hong Ye-Mong and Cruel Moon Archdemon from afar.

Volume 12[]

Hyeon Jae-Yang and his companion continued travelling through the underground passages and upon turning a corner, stumbled upon Cruel Moon Archdemon and his subordinates.

When Cruel Moon Archdemon wondered how Goo Hwi survived their earlier confrontation, Hyeon Jae-Yang used this opportunity to insult Goo Hwi with a joke, to which the Black Snake leader responded with a beat down. Goo Hwi then confronted Cruel Moon Archdemon and they both readied to fight. As Cruel Moon Archdemon exuded an immense amount of ki, Hyeon Jae-Yang recognized that the Prelate was preparing to use a Demonic Technique. Thinking back to Hong Ye-Mong's words, Hyeon Jae-Yang got angry when he realized that Cruel Moon Archdemon was one of the demonists Sanggwan Chaek collaborated with but he was hesitant to join the fight as Goo Hwi was preparing for battle instead. As the ki Cruel Moon Archdemon was generating destroys the environment, Hyeon Jae-Yang blocked a strand of ki flying towards him and recognized it as incorporeal ki. With this information, Hyeon Jae-Yang came to the conclusion that the Prelate was going to use the most powerful move of the Incorporeal Demonic Techniques, and noted that Goo Hwi cannot win.

Then everyone watched in shock as Goo Hwi tore Cruel Moon Archdemon apart and acknowledged the Heaven Ravager King's fearsome strength. Cruel Moon Archdemon regenerated his body behind Goo Hwi and attempted a surprise attack but Goo Hwi countered it having learned not to let down his guard from their first clash. Then the Prelate created multiple clones of himself. As the bystanders watch, both of the combatants were revealed to be trapped in a hemispherical ward created by the Prelate. Hyeon Jae-Yang realized that Cruel Moon Archdemon was just buying time from the beginning to create the ward and recognized the technique as the Stygian Demonic Slaughtering Wall, the Asura Blood Sect's ultimate technique. Inside the ward, Goo Hwi happily welcomed the clones and then generated an immense amount of ki and heat. Then Cruel Moon Archdemon's cloned move in to attack and Goo Hwi unleashed his strongest technique which smashed through the ward.

The explosion from Goo Hwi's technique radiated outward annihilating everything in its path and the nearby observers braced for impact. When the dust settled, Cruel Moon Archdemon's clones gruesomely blow apart and were completely incinerated, leaving only the true Prelate standing. Hyeon Jae-Yang mentioned that Goo Hwi had completely smashed the Stygian Demonic Slaughtering Wall. When the Prelate himself died, Hyeon Jae-Yang approached Goo Hwi and praised him for his remarkable growth in strength. Goo Hwi responded by challenging the elderly man to a fight and then fainted.

Hyeon Jae-Yang examined the unconscious Goo Hwi and wondered how the latter was resisting the effects of the Demonic Technique's poison. The elderly man guessed that Goo Hwi either learned an incredibly powerful reflective ki barrier technique or received help from someone whose medical arts had reached the level of a sage. He then ordered the Young Lady to evacuate Goo Hwi while he goes deal with a different matter.

Meanwhile, Mad Blood Archdemon had a stern talk with Jincheon and the latter perished soon after. With that done, the man called out to Hyeon Jae-Yang to bring him out of hiding. The man assured Hyeon Jae-Yang that there was no need for conflict as he was only in the Muhae Valley under the Grand Prelate's orders to stop Cruel Moon Archdemon and bring the Prelate back to the Sect, adding that the death of Cruel Moon Archdemon and their outdated information on the Middle Kingdom would push back the Sect's plans to invade the Middle Kingdom by at least ten years. Responding to the declaration of war, Hyeon Jae-Yang questioned the man on his true identity. The man introduced himself as Mad Blood Archdemon who was the third Prelate of the Asura Blood Sect and also the most brutal. It was also revealed that he was currently disguised using the Bone Contraction Technique to give himself a different appearance. When Mad Blood Archdemon left, Hyeon Jae-Yang readily welcomed him to a battle in ten years.

Volume 13[]

Then walking up the bridge just before the Golden Castle and looking at it from afar, Hyeon Jae-Yang mused about it while Goo Hwi lied sleeping nearby. He then crossed het bridge heading to the castle but not before telling the Young Lady that she can follow if she's brave enough. At the other side of the bridge, Hyeon Jae-Yang looked at all the corpses and noted that their greed led them to their deaths. Additionally, he caught a glimpse of a figure in a tunnel above him.

Suddenly, a blood curdling scream startled him, and the Young Lady, in a panic, pointed him to body of a monk among the corpses. Hyeon Jae-Yang determined that the monk was Ilgak and wondered how someone as skilled as Ilgak could die there. In return for saving Gwan's life, they decided to give the monk a proper funeral. As they cremate the body, Ilgak suddenly came back to life and he later revealed that he faked his death using a secret technique he invented. In a conversation, Ilgak further revealed that he fought against the Lightning God's Blue Dragon Sword, and alluded that the person wielding it might be someone Hyeon Jae-Yang knew. At that, Hyeon Jae-Yang told the Young Lady to stay behind and then entered the rock pillar the Golden Castle was perched on. Navigating through the tunnels, Hyeon Jae-Yang encountered his disciple.

He urged Sanggwan Chaek to return home with him but the latter refused. Sanggwan Chaek exhibited his inferiority complex and now that he had obtained the Lightning God's Blue Dragon Sword that allowed him to surpass the likes of masters such as Yongbi and Hyeon Jae-Yang, he was reluctant to give it up. He then gave Hyeon Jae-Yang the opportunity to leave unharmed. Angered by Sanggwan Chaek's actions, Hyeon Jae-Yang prepared to discipline his disciple. Sanggwan Chaek grabbed his sword, releasing a destructive wave of ki that reached outside of the Golden Castle.

Volume 14[]

Hyeon Jae-Yang blocked the ki wave unprecedented and goaded Sanggwan Chaek to come at him at full power. Sanggwan Chaek unleashed a vicious assault on his master but was unable to land any hits, and was instead thrown around. However, Sanggwan Chaek did not give up and continued attacking which forced Hyeon Jae-Yang to strike Sanggwan Chaek with a powerful palmstrike, sending Sanggwan Chaek crashing into a nearby wall and breaking his neck. Hyeon Jae-Yang examined his Sanggwan Chaek's body and expressed remorse over the accidental killing of his disciple but then the latter slashed him. Hyeon Jae-Yang narrowly dodged the surprise attack, receiving only a small cut to his forehead. Sanggwan Chaek rose, noticeably possessed by some kind of demonic entity and with scales growing on his skin. Suddenly, Hyeon Jae-Yang's companion entered the room in search of Sanggwan Chaek, causing the latter to target her.

Sanggwan Chaek rushed over to stab the Young Lady but Hyeon Jae-Yang intervened; blocking the attack with a ball of ki in time. When the young lady expressed concern for Chaek, Hyeon Jae-Yang informed her that the young man was dead and that the Lightning God's Blue Dragon Sword's spectre was controlling the body. Even at eight tenths of its full power, Hyeon Jae-Yang's Black Celestial Technique was no match for the godly sword and Sanggwan Chaek (possessed) was able to penetrate through and stab his master. Then Hyeon Jae-Yang commanded the Young Lady to run away and unleashed his Grand Divine Celestial Destruction Technique which dealt fatal blows to Sanggwan Chaek and nearly destroyed the Golden Castle. Outside, Ilgak noted that the Golden Castle would have been smashed to smithereens if Hyeon Jae-Yang used his ultimate technique at full power and wondered if he held back out of consideration for his favorite disciple. Ilgak found Hyeon Jae-Yang among the rubble and corrected his distorted ki flow but was unable to do more for his severe internal injuries. Then they shockingly watched Sanggwan Chaek's possessed body rise up from the rubble nearby with his grievous wounds healing.

Hyeon Jae-Yang expressed regret for withdrawing his ki halfway through his ultimate technique out of love for his disciple. As Sanggwan Chaek's possessed body approached the trio, Yongbi arrived in time and fought the sword possessed Sanggwan Chaek. Yongbi eventually obliterated his opponent's body, launching the Lightning God's Blue Dragon Sword out of the Golden Castle and into the depths below, causing a reaction to occur.

Volume 15[]

Ilgak, Hyeon Jae-Yang, and the Young Lady tried to evacuate by crossing the suspension bridge but tremors in the volcano made it difficult. Suddenly, Biryong galloped past them going in the opposite direction and then they encounter Goo Hwi who was about to pursue the horse. They had a short conversation and Ilgak eventually convinced Goo Hwi to carry Hyeon Jae-Yang out much to the latter's chagrin. They found their way out of the volcano and rushed to get as far away as possible.

Goo Hwi then reunited with Sohee and the Black Snake. After a short conversation, Hyeon Jae-Yang urged them to leave the valley as soon as possible. Then the volcano erupted and everyone in the Muhae Valley hurried to escape.

With the recent incident passing, Gwan goes to the Hweyang Villa to inform Hyeon Jae-Yang who spent a lot of his time at the villa ruminating, that a messenger from the Murim Alliance had arrived. The old man returned to the Cheonwoong Faction's headquarters and found out that the messenger was none other than Ilgak. The monk informed Hyeon Jae-Yang that the Cheonwoong Faction was punished with three months probation for their involvement surrounding the Golden Medallion. Furthermore, it is revealed the Murim Alliance had been wary of the Asura Blood Sect all along and have been prepared for their eventual return. Their conversation continued outside and Ilgak mentioned that before he can return to the Shaolin, he must complete the task of finding and bringing Yongbi to the Murim Alliance. At that, Hyeon Jae-Yang mused about the powerful gosu in the murim and affirmed that truly, the "Murim is Vast"

Yongbi the Invincible - A Side Story[]

Volume 4[]

At the Murim Alliance's headquarters, Hyeon Jae-Yang and the Murim High Lord lazily lie around having a drink. He expressed his discontent with his probation and accused the High Lord of chaining him there just to be his drinking buddy. The High Lord's subordinate showed up and angrily noted that the High Lord and Hyeon Jae-Yang once again damaged the roof in another of their quarrels before announcing that an important guest had arrived. Then going out to meet the guest, it turned out to be none other than the Grand General, Yuk Jingang.
