Sanggwan Chaek, the Blue-Hearted Young Master (청심공자 상관책, Cheongsimgongja Sang-gwanchaeg; "Blue-Hearted Young Master, Sanggwan Chaek") was Hyeon Jae-Yang's second disciple and a former member of the Cheonwoong Faction (천웅방, Cheon-ungbang).
Appearance & Personality[]
Sanggwan Chaek was a young man with a lean but muscular body, black hair tied back into a long ponytail, and long sideburns. He wore traditional attire with the character 天 on each shoulder.
He was generally a polite and respectful young man who liked to joke around but would also quickly become serious in battle. Despite his simple mannerisms, Sanggwan Chaek harbored a inferiority complex deep inside which drove him to ally with the demonists to seek out a godly sword that would give him the power to surpass his master and Yongbi. Despite defecting from the Cheonwoong Faction, he still cared about about its members (especially Gwan) since he expressed sorrow over their deaths and regretted that Gwan was caught up in his plan to defect. Further more, after acquiring the Lightning God's Blue Dragon Sword, Sanggwan Chaek admitted that he cannot hate his master after everything the latter had done for him and gave Hyeon Jae-Yang a chance to leave instead of fighting.

History[]
As a child, Sanggwan Chaek was associated with the remnant followers of Go Hyeop. He watched Hyeon Jae-Yang slaughter his comrades and attempted to assassinate the man after but was stopped by Hyeon Jae-Yang's subordinates. Impressed by his fiery nature, Hyeon Jae-Yang took Sanggwan Chaek in as a disciple.[1]
Many years later, Sanggwan Chaek collaborated with the demonists of the Asura Blood Sect and brought them to the Middle Kingdom to search for the Golden Medallion and in turn, the Golden Castle and Lightning God's Blue Dragon Sword.[2]
Plot[]
Yongbi the Invincible[]
Volume 3[]
Finding Yongbi's location, Sanggwan Chaek smashed through the wall behind him and respectfully introduced himself before attacking with his whip. He relentlessly unleashed a flurry of attacks but Yongbi skillfully evaded all of them. As they clash, Yongbi used Goo Hwi's body to bait out one of Sanggwan Chaek's attacks and as Yongbi was about to strike Sanggwan Chaek with a surprise attack, the latter surrenders. Sanggwan Chaek then properly introduced himself as the second disciple of the Cheonwoong Faction. Adding that he was only testing Yongbi's skills. He then explained to Yongbi that he sought him out because his master liked to befriend heroes from all over the world. While Yongbi gathered his belongings, he scolded Sanggwan Chaek for attacking him. After finding out that Biryong had gotten drunk by licking the wine off a monk's body, Yongbi had to rely on Sanggwan Chaek's horse to pull his cart.
As they continued their travels, Sanggwan Chaek's horse ran into a wire trap and freaked out, throwing all the occupants off the carriage. Then the assassins jumped out of hiding to attack during the confusion. Yongbi prepared to fight but unfortunately, Biryong fell on and crushed him. Sanggwan Chaek intervened and the assassins withdrew their attack. Looking up, Sanggwan Chaek was shocked that the assassins were seemingly standing on nothing but thin air. He was slightly intimidated since he thought the assassins were using the Air Striding Step, a technique only the Twelve Supreme Masters were said to be capable of using. The assassins told Sanggwan Chaek to withdraw as they did not wish to antagonise the Cheonwoong Faction and Sanggwan Chaek refused, noting that Yongbi was a valued guest of the faction. As both sides prepared to fight, Sanggwan noticed that the assassins were actually standing on wires and laughed at himself for thinking the assassins were comparable to the Twelve Supreme Masters. Then the assassins attacked and Sanggwan Chaek proceeded to effortlessly kill all of his opponents.
Then continuing their journey, Sanggwan Chaek and Yongbi talked about the Cheonwoong Faction and Goo Hwi along the way. Eventually, they reach one of the Cheonwoong Faction's outposts. After entering the Cheonwoong Faction's outpost, the guards greeted Yongbi as a hero and Sanggwan Chaek ordered Commander Namgung to inform the other faction members of Yongbi's arrival. As the guards started to leave, they noticed an unconscious Goo Hwi lying on the cart. Overcome with rage, they all drew their weapons and prepared to kill Goo Hwi as revenge for their comrades he had slaughtered in the past. Sanggwan Chaek shouted at them to stop and scolded them for their impertinence, adding that since Yongbi captured Goo Hwi, it was up to him on how to deal with the latter. The guards then apologized.
Volume 4[]
Over wine, Yongbi told an incredibly embellished story of how he captured Goo Hwi to Sanggwan Chaek. After running out of wine, Yongbi left to retrieve his cask of wine. After returning to the patio, Sanggwan Chaek held Yongbi back from killing the monk from before, who had somehow slipped into Yongbi's cask and consumed all the wine.
Later, Gwan, the fifth disciple of the Cheonwoong Faction, arrived and Upon meeting Yongbi, pummeled him with his sectioned staff, expressing shock that a martial artist who captured Goo Hwi would fall for such an obvious surprise attack. Sanggwan Chaek mentioned that even their master would have fallen for it in their situation. After finding out that Yongbi had actually arrived a day ago, Gwan left to confront the guards on their lie. Sanggwan Chaek then apologized to Yongbi for Gwan's behavior while Yongbi delt with his injuries from the beating. Suddenly, Sanggwan Chaek noticed a fight at the villa's entrance and rushed to it. At the villa's entrance, a warrior of the Asura Blood Sect effortlessly killed the Cheonwoong Faction's first-class bodyguards as Gwan watched in shock. When the warrior insulted the Cheonwoong Faction, Gwan became enraged and wielded his four-sectioned staff. As Gwan moved in to attack, Sanggwan Chaek appeared and unleashed a technique on the Blood Sect members. Sanggwan Chaek held off the Asura Blood Sect warriors while Gwan rushed to inform headquarters of their situation. As Gwan escaped, he ran into Cruel Moon Archdemon and proceeded to attack him. Sanggwan Chaek noticed this and attempted to stop Gwan but the Blood Sect warriors hindered him. Gwan struck Cruel Moon Archdemon with a powerful attack but to his shock, Cruel Moon Archdemon was unscathed (thanks to his regeneration). Cruel Moon Archdemon praised Gwan's martial art prowess before taking him down.
Back at the patio, Yongbi mused about the faction and its members. Suddenly Sanggwan Chaek crashed through the patio, destroying it and crushing Yongbi with debris. Cruel Moon Archdemon and his subordinates floated down onto the building across the patio with the former holding Gwan's limp body. As Sanggwan Chaek laid heavily injured among the patio's rubble, he told Yongbi to escape. However, Yongbi decided to clash with the Blood Sect members.
Volume 5[]
During the arduous battle, Sanggwan Chaek revealed himself as a traitor when he bound Yongbi with a whip, allowing Cruel Moon Archdemon to land a deadly palm strike on the former. He then retrieved the Golden Medallion, before telling the demonists that they have to leave before the faction members arrive. Sanggwan Chaek also noticed that Gwan's body disappeared. Then Commander Namgung and the other guards arrived. Sanggwan Chaek angrily questioned them on what they were doing while the events unfolded, and the guards pleaded for the chance to kill Goo Hwi as revenge for their slaughtered comrades. Sanggwan Chaek scolded them but ultimately allowed them to do so, stating that he would only wait an hour.
In the morning, Sanggwan Chaek continued waiting for Commander Namgung and the other guards but soon realized that they weren't coming. In addition, he expressed grief over what happened to Gwan.
Volume 6[]
Sanggwan Chaek and the warriors of the Asura Blood Sect sit around waiting for Cruel Moon Archdemon to fully recover. After a heated exchange, Sanggwan Chaek revealed that by harming Gwan, they dragged one of the Five Warrior Emperors into the fray, the Divine Lord of Destruction, Hyeon Jae-Yang! Something Sanggwan Chaek wanted to avoid at all costs.
Later, Cruel Moon Archdemon reassured Sanggwan Chaek that there was nothing to worry about the Cheonwoong Faction taking action against them and to have faith in him. He then questioned Sanggwan Chaek if he could interpret the metaphorical description on the location of the Golden Castle, 'a silvery sea guarded by a three-headed fire-breathing dragon". At that, Sanggwan Chaek's expressed shock.
Some time later, Sanggwan Chaek and the demonists arrived at the edge of the Muhae Valley and the former confirmed that it was indeed where the Golden Castle lied. Unbeknownst to them, they were being trailed by a mysterious person.
Volume 7[]
Somewhere in the Valley, Sanggwan Chaek and the demonists realised that they had stumbled into a protective ward. Cruel Moon Archdemon noted that the presence of a protective ward could only mean that the Golden Castle must be nearby and then unleashed a devastating technique, breaking through the ward. The group quickly continued onward before the thick fog could regather. Then they traverse deeper into the Muhae Valley, the Golden Medallion around Sanggwan Chaek's neck activated and started to glow. Before the demonists could notice, Sanggwan Chaek hid the glowing medallion inside his clothing. They caught up to him and wondered if he was alright and Sanggwan Chaek replied that he was feeling tired. At that, Cruel Moon Archdemon decided to camp for the night.
Later in the middle of the night, Sanggwan Chaek slipped away while the demonists slept but Cruel Moon Archdemon noticed him. Sanggwan Chaek ran far away but the demonists caught up to him. As Sanggwan Chaek trembled in fear, Cruel Moon Archdemon inquired him on the betrayal. Then the presence of a man distracted the demonists momentarily, allowing Sanggwan Chaek to perform an attack and escape. However, the demonists easily caught up again and when one of the demonists insulted him, Sanggwan Chaek confidently pulled out his whip and prepared to fight. Sanggwan Chaek clashed with the demonists but was completely overwhelmed. One of the demonists, Myochu, arrogantly approached the heavily injured Sanggwan Chaek and was caught off guard and bounded by the former's whip. Myochu deflected the first strike but the whip loops back around and successfully entered his arm. The whip passed through Myochu's entire body and brutally ripped him apart from the inside out. His comrades panic and attempted to deploy the Eight Docked Gates Formation but then rushed to defend their captain, Jincheon, who had become frozen with rage. Jincheon then released his ki and exploded with fury. Enraged, Jincheon rushed Sanggwan Chaek and the latter attempted to escape. However, Sanggwan Chaek was unable to shake off Jincheon's pursuit and ended up taking multiple heavy blows. Jincheon sent the unconscious Sanggwan Chaek flying through several trees over a great distance, and then told his subordinates to retrieve the body along with the Golden Medallion. Cruel Moon Archdemon caught up with Jincheon and the latter apologized for Myochu's death. As the other demonists were looking for Sanggwan Chaek's body, a vine came out of nowhere and sliced one of them to pieces. Cruel Moon Archdemon yelled at his men to stand back and prepared to clash with the monstrous old man controlling the vines. At some point, the mysterious old man (Go Hyeop) was able to retrieve Sanggwan Chaek's body and escape with him.
Volume 10[]
Go Hyeop was seen dragging Sanggwan Chaek's body to the Golden Castle.
Volume 11[]
In an unknown place, Go Hyeop held the Golden Medallion over Sanggwan Chaek and prepared to heal him. After some time passed, Sanggwan Chaek woke up and discovered that someone had poured incredible inner ki into his body. Then he wondered where was, unable to remember anything after being knocked unconscious by Jincheon. Grabbing the Golden Medallion, Sanggwan Chaek forced himself up and explored the area despite having a few broken ribs. Then the medallion activated and a beam of light guided him to the entrance of the Golden Castle. At the Golden Castle's entrance, Sanggwan Chaek approached it and inserted the medallion into a slot which opened the entrance up. Entering, he found the Golden Castle filled to the brim with treasures and gold but his attention was focused on only one thing, the legendary Lightning God's Blue Dragon Sword sitting on a pedestal among the treasure. Go Hyeop rushed to stop Sanggwan Chaek from taking the sword since he knew the young man was unable to control it. However, it was too late and Sanggwan Chaek stabbed him. This caused a beam of light to shoot into the sky and caused thunder and lightning to occur (possibly signifying that Sanggwan Chaek had obtained the power of the lightning god).
Sanggwan Chaek recalled a memory of his childhood where he watched a man slaughter a group of martial artists around him. Then in the present, he threw aside the Lightning God's Blue Dragon Sword and realized that he was experiencing these memories due to the demonic influence of the sword and that he was struggling to contain its godly power. When Sanggwan Chaek noticed blood on the side of his torso, Go Hyeop attacked him in retaliation. As Sanggwan Chaek struggled to get away, he ended up grabbing the Lightning God's Blue Dragon Sword and easily cut his foe apart. With the old man dead, Sanggwan Chaek recalled Hyeon Jae-Yang's words on the indignity of relying on the power of the godly sword instead of striving to improve one's self but Sanggwan Chaek rejected those words, adding that he couldn't surpass his master no matter how hard he practiced.
Later elsewhere, Sanggwan Chaek, who appeared to be driven mad and was wielding the Lightning God's Blue Dragon Sword, traversed the tunnels, slaughtering martial artists along the way.
Volume 12[]
Sanggan Chaek was on a killing spree under the influence of the godly sword when Ilgak encountered and happily greeted him. As they clash, Ilgak evaded every attack from Sanggwan Chaek and the monk expressed his disappointment in the latter's level of swordsmanship when wielding such a powerful sword. Catching the blade in his hands, Ilgak attempted to disarm Sanggwan Chaek of the sword but the power of the sword tore away at Ilgak's palm, causing the monk to fall back. As the battle continued, the sword proved too strong for Ilgak to handle and the monk had to fake his death to survive.
Volume 13[]
Retreating back to the Golden Castle, Hyeon Jae-Yang chased after Sanggwan Chaek and eventually came face to face with his disciple. Hyeon Jae-Yang urged Sanggwan Chaek to return home with him but the latter refuses. Sanggwan Chaek exhibited his inferiority complex and now he had obtained the Lightning God's Blue Dragon Sword that alloweds him to surpass the likes of masters such as Yongbi and Hyeon Jae-Yang, he was reluctant to give it up. He then gave Hyeon Jae-Yang the opportunity to leave unharmed. Angered by Sanggwan Chaek's actions, Hyeon Jae-Yang prepared to discipline his disciple. Sanggwan Chaek grabbed his sword, releasing a destructive wave of ki that reached outside of the Golden Castle.
Volume 14[]
Hyeon Jae-Yang blocked the the destructive ki wave unprecedented and goaded Sanggwan Chaek to come at him at full power. Sanggwan Chaek unleashed a vicious assault on his master but was unable to land any hits, and was instead thrown around. However, Sanggwan Chaek did not give up and continued attacking which forced Hyeon Jae-Yang to strike Sanggwan Chaek with a powerful palmstrike, sending Sanggwan Chaek crashing into a nearby wall, breaking his neck and killing him.
At this point, Sanggwan Chaek was dead and the Lightning God's Blue Dragon Sword's malignant spirit took over his body. As Hyeon Jae-Yang expressed remorse over the accidental killing of his disciple, "Sangwan Chaek" slashed him. Hyeon Jae-Yang narrowly dodged the surprise attack, receiving only a small cut to his forehead. Sanggwan Chaek rose, noticeably possessed by some kind of demonic entity and with scales growing on his skin. Suddenly, Hyeon Jae-Yang's companion entered the room in search of Sanggwan Chaek, causing the latter to target her. Sanggwan Chaek rushed over to stab the Young Lady but Hyeon Jae-Yang intervened; blocking the attack with a ball of ki in time. When the young lady expressed concern for Chaek, Hyeon Jae-Yang informed her that the young man was dead and that the Lightning God's Blue Dragon Sword's spectre was controlling the body. Even at eight tenths of its full power, Hyeon Jae-Yang's Black Celestial Technique was no match for the godly sword and Sanggwan Chaek was able to penetrate through and stab his master. Then Hyeon Jae-Yang commanded the Young Lady to run away and unleashed his Grand Divine Celestial Destruction Technique which dealt fatal blows to Sanggwan Chaek's body and nearly destroyed the Golden Castle. Outside, Ilgak noted that the Golden Castle would have been smashed to smithereens if Hyeon Jae-Yang used his ultimate technique at full power and wondered if he held back out of consideration for his favorite disciple. Ilgak found Hyeon Jae-Yang among the rubble and corrected his distorted ki flow but was unable to do more for his severe internal injuries. Then they shockingly watched Sanggwan Chaek's possessed body rise up from the rubble nearby with his grievous wounds healing.
Soon after, Yongbi arrived and took on Sanggwan Chaek's possessed body and the godly sword. During the fight, Jeok Seong arrived and was mercilessly cut down by "Sanggwan Chaek", causing the enraged Yongbi to obliterate Chaek's body once and for all, launching the Lightning God's Blue Dragon Sword out of the Golden Castle and into the depths below.
Powers and Abilities[]
All of Hyeon Jae-Yang's disciples are said to be martial art geniuses without peer,[3] and Sanggwan Chaek did this reputation full justice as at a young age, his talent already surpassed Hyeon Jae-Yang's when the latter was forty.[1] Talent wise, he was considered the best among the seven disciples,[1] and his martial arts prowess was also praised by Yongbi.[4]
Immense Endurance: He was able to contend with multiple enemies at once on more than one occasion.[5][6] Even after receiving notable injuries, he easily killed one of Cruel Moon Archdemon's bodyguards and clashed with their captain.[7]
Immense Physical Speed: Throughout the story, Sanggwan Chaek has shown multiple feats of immense speed when evading and attacking, and was able to pressure a gosu of Yongbi's calibre for a while.[8]
Immense Reflexes: His amazing reflexes allowed him to agilely evade unpredictable attacks and to quickly block attacks at close range.[9]
Weapons[]
Master Whip Practitioner: He was an extremely skilled and powerful martial artist famed for being the wielder of the Golden-Ringed Tiger Bone Whip.[10] Sanggwan Chaek was able to easily maneuver the whip in any direction he pleased, using it to bind, impale, and rip his opponents. His combat style was to incorporate unpredictable and wild movements with impalement and binding. The whip boasts incredible penetrative power that can easily stab through rocks and hardened soil multiple times without slowing down. After the whip is embedded in the target, he can violently tear it apart, creating massive cavities.[11] When impaling a person, the whip can pass through their entire body and violently rip them apart from the inside out.[7]
Lightning God's Blue Dragon Sword: With this godly sword, Sanggwan Chaek was able to obtain the power of the lightning god and obtain unparalleled swordsmanship when its powers awaken. However, even he cannot control its power,[1] instead turning into a mindless beast who only acts to kill whoever is in front of him. When his body was possessed by the sword's spectre, he was reborn as the "most powerful, invincible warrior under the sun", having been granted unlimited regeneration and the ability to use powerful techniques not normally possible.[12] Even if his head was blown off, his possessed body would still be able to continue fighting.[13]
- Chain Manipulation: The power of the Lightning God's Blue Dragon Sword also allows the user to freely manipulate chains to bind or impale their target.[14]
- Regeneration: The godly sword grants its wielder the ability to recover from even the most grievous wounds making them almost immortal.[15]
As a whip practitioner since his childhood,[16] Sanggwan Chaek had mastered the Spirit Snake Whip Technique. He was also granted great power when the Lightning God's Blue Dragon Sword was in his possession:
- Sword Force: Normally achievable only when a user has reached the pinnacle of swordsmanship, he was able to use this powerful technique when his body was possessed by the godly sword's spectre.[17]
- Spirit Snake Whip Technique, Spirit Snake’s Devotion
- Spirit Snake Whip Technique, Spirit Snake’s Protection
- Spirit Snake Whip Technique, The 1st Move: Spirit Snake Discharge
- Spirit Snake Whip Technique, The 2nd Move: Flying Spirit Snake Coil
- Spirit Snake Whip Technique, The 4th Move: Moon Taunting Discharge

- (After fighting Yongbi) "Please forgive me for daring to test your skills...!"[8]
- (To Hyeon Jae-Yang) "I finally got the power in my hands to catch the tiger... And you're telling to return to being a mangy dog..."[1]
Notes & Trivia[]
- Contrary to what Hyeon Jae-Yang said, Sanggwan Chaek claimed that he was the least talented among the seven disciples so he was most likely just being modest.[4]
