History[]
In the past, he lived alone with his prostitute mother since his father was arrested for murder before he was even born and was forced into the Black Lancers cavalry regiment never to be seen again.[1] However, one day, his mother left him in the care of the village chief, noting that she would be back in a year. Because his mother was a prostitute and his father was a murderer, he earned the ire of the village chief's wife who constantly abused him. After a year, the child's mother still hadn't come back for him but he goes looking for her when a peddler named "Chuldo" informed him of her location.[2]

Volume 2[]
With information on his mother's whereabouts, So Jinmyung started making his way there. In a village, he inquired on the location of the village Hwamuchon. After learning of the distance that the boy traveled, the villagers sent him off with a map and food. The boy treked continuously over the mountains but at night, he was unable to find a path and got lost. Then he saw a light and he headed in that direction eventually stumbling upon an abandoned house where he spent the night.
In the morning, So Jinmyung continued his journey but not without getting lost along the way. As starvation set in, the boy stumbled upon a dead pheasant. He cooked the pheasant on a fire made using a technique taught to him by uncle "Chuldo" and continued on after having his fill. Later, the boy hilariously met a hunter as the former relieved himself, and after a brief conversation, the hunter expressed shock that the boy was able to traverse through such dangerous areas swarming with vipers. The hunter then noticed his prey and chased after it while Jinmyung resumed his journey. Deep inside the forest, the hunter finished off the deer and as he prepared to carry his game home, the hunter noticed that the forest was full of dead vipers, revealing that someone was watching over and protecting Jinmyung.
Elsewhere, So Jinmyung approached and informed a sleeping old man that the latter's fishing pole had caught onto a fish. Recognizing the young boy from the stories of passersby, the old man offered to take the boy across the river to save time. After being taken across the river, he thanked the old man and continued on.
In a village, people talk about So Jinmyung's journey to find his mother, while going about their day. As a man rode home from the doctor, he noticed Jinmyung climbing a ladder made out of vines, and rushed over to help him up. After conversing, the boy agreed to stay the night at the man's house and that the man would take him to Hwamuchon the next day. Arriving at his home deep in the mountains, the man saw his wife lying on the ground and he hurriedly brought her back into their home while she exclaimed that she fell asleep waiting for him. At this point, he recognized the man's wife as his mother but kept quiet about it. The man than gave Jinmyung some food and he ate it before going to bed.
Early in the morning, So Jinmyung attempted to sneak way but ran into his mother outside. In their conversation, it was revealed that she was nearly blind and the boy lied and told her that his name is "Jang Icchou". The boy then exclaimed that the man was a good person and his mother happily agreed. After leaving, on a cliff nearby, he gazed at the man's home one last time before leaving. Later as he sat depressed on a cliff, "Chuldo"(Goo Hwi) arrived and called out to him. Chuldo questioned him on why he hasn't gone to see his mother yet despite her being so close, and So Jinmyung lied that she wasn't there but at Hobuk castle. Calling out the boy on the lie, Goo Hwi said that he would take the boy to her but Jinmyung lashed out, claiming that the nearly blind woman from before wasn't his mom as he never seen her so happy before (essentially, he thinks that she was happier off without him). Goo Hwi insisted but the boy yelled out that a man should never make a woman sad, adding that he was a man (meaning that he was willing to endure never seeing his mother again just to keep letting her live a happy life). Goo Hwi then agreed.
Yongbi later revealed that So Jinmyung was sent to Geumcheonbo to learn how to be a merchant under Yul Mugi. His mother was sent to Hobuk castle for medical treatment, and that her sight was expected to recover but nothing could be done about her amnesia.
It was also revealed that Yongbi, making amends, since So Jinmyung's father was a fellow member of the Black Lancers, commissioned the Black Snake to help reunite Jinmyung with his mother. Goo Hwi was the one that followed and aided Jinmyung on his journey while Black Snake members Jang-Ryong and Pung-Ho watched over his mother.
