The Gold Bug (황금충, Hwang-geumchung) also known as the Impassive Supremo, was the king of all beggars in the Middle Kingdom.[1] He was also one of the Twelve Supreme Masters of the Old Murim Alliance, being the Celestial Eminence of the Three Eminences (삼존 (三尊), Samjon).
Appearance & Personality[]
The Gold Bug is an elderly man with prominent wrinkles. He has elongated earlobes, a thick white beard, flaring white eyebrows and his hair is tied back into a traditional bun. His most distinguishing physical feature is the large mole on his forehead. He usually wore luxurious clothing befitting his high status. However, when he goes collecting money, he puts on shabby clothes and has an unkempt appearance.
The Gold Bug was a very wise and trustworthy individual. Due to being indifferent to the worldly affairs, he was given the title of 'Impassive Supremo', but he is helpful and respectful to those aligned with him such as Yongbi. He was willing to lend enormous sums of money to Yongbi and not squander the money Yongbi gave him to help the Horselords' tribe. For everyone else, he is more than happy to take all their money (without their consent).

History[]
Many years prior to the events of Yongbi the Invincible, the Gold Bug became acquaintanced with Yongbi when he escorted him many times on his trips to the western regions.[2]
When Yongbi lost his will to live after the tragedy at Yogok Gorge, the Gold Bug rescued him and nursed him back to health. With nowhere for Yongbi to return to, the Gold Bug brought him to the murim.[2]
Later, Elder Muk arranged a meeting between Yongbi and Hong Ye-Mong through the Gold Bug which resulted in their engagement.[3]

Volume 2[]
In a town, two men passed by the Gold Bug who was begging for money. When the men noticed him, they got emotional and gave him their money. As the two men left, they came to their senses and wondered why they gave the beggar all their money. They rushed back only to once again give him their valuable belongings with one man even snapping off his gold tooth. When they leave again, they wondered why they were acting like this and finally recognized him as the Gold Bug. Knowing that they would never recover their belongings, the two men leave. Meanwhile, a group of beggars watched from afar and lamented the Gold Bug wiping the town clean of money which left them with nothing. Then a fixer from the Beggars' Sect arrived to kill the Gold Bug. The fixer unleashed his venomous sable named Lightning Flash, at the Gold Bug. Unexpectedly, Lightning Flash skinned himself and presented the pelt to the old man. After, the fixer berated Lightning Flash for his failure. Seeing the commotion from the members of the Beggars' Sect, the Gold Bug left.
Meeting up with Yongbi later, the Gold Bug respectfully greeted him. Then Yongbi and the Gold Bug discussed the former's debt while travelling. Yongbi also revealed the Golden Medallion to the Gold Bug, and that he wanted Goo Hwi healed to discover the whereabouts of Yul Mugi. As Biryong pulled their cart, the Gold Bug's donkey played around which irritated Biryong. Reaching their destination, the Gold Bug revealed to Yongbi the large ship he was hiding but then they were suddenly interrupted by the crying of the donkey. Thinking Biryong and the donkey were being attacked by a tiger, Yongbi rushed to their aid only to find Biryong violating the male donkey. Humiliated, Yongbi quivered with anger on the ground while Biryong hid his head in shame.
Soon after on the Gold Bug's ship, the godly doctor, Gongson Seung, treated Goo Hwi with acupuncture. When the Gold Bug and Yongbi go into a room nearby, Biryong was found crouching in a corner seemingly penitent. The Gold Bug convinced Yongbi to forgive him and after Biryong left the room, he smugly revealed that he was only pretending to repent. With Biryong gone, the Gold Bug and Yongbi had a discussion with the former explaining the Golden Castle and that it contained treasures beyond comprehension including the legendary Lightning God's Blue Dragon Sword. He also added that the entire Murim was in an uproar because the Golden Medallion can lead its owner to the Golden Castle. The Gold Bug then talked about the origins of the Golden Castle and the story of how it was thought to be a myth until the castle was discovered by Yul Mog-In twenty years ago. From this information, Yongbi deducted that Yul Mugi also knew the location of the Golden Castle otherwise Yul Mog-In would not have been murdered. Then Yongbi inquired the Gold Bug one last time on why Yul Mugi would give such a precious medallion to him, a complete stranger. From Yul Mugi's actions, the Gold Bug deduced that the reason the boy gave the Golden Medallion to a complete stranger was to get the stranger to accompany him to Hobuk Castle so that he could discover Hwangbo Soong's true nature since he had doubts about Hwangbo Soong's sincerity. The Gold Bug also noted that Yul Mugi was a child prodigy so it was not so far fetched that he had calculated that far. When Yongbi expressed his worries that the ones who had abducted Yul Mugi already pried the location of the Golden Castle from him, the Gold Bug assured him that Yul Mugi would not divulge that knowledge so easily when he knew that his life may be forfeit the moment he revealed the location. He then added that the abductors could have questioned the boy's soul directly after extracting it from his body but they both laugh hysterically to such a preposterous suggestion.
That night, Yongbi suffered from a nightmare and ended up wrecking the room in the process. Noticing the wreckage, the Gold Bug entered the room and asked Yongbi if he had displeased him in any way.
Volume 3[]
In the morning, Yongbi left to resume his journey but not before the Gold Bug warned him that winter was almost upon them and that it was a time that required a lot of money. With Yongbi gone, the Gold Bug prepared to set sail as well. On the deck of the ship Gongson Seung expressed his contempt for Yongbi, and questioned the Gold Bug on why he would lend enormous sums of money to such a disrespectful person. The Gold Bug replied that Yongbi was a man worth lending money to, even if it's such a great sum because he was someone who was shouldering the lives of thirty thousand people.
Volume 13[]
At an unknown place, the Gold Bug washed his face in a stream and reminiscenced the time he first met Yongbi. Later, the Gold Bug and Gongson Seung had a meeting with the leader of a nomadic tribe. In the meeting, the Gold Bug traded a large chest of gold for ownership of one thousand slaves. After participating in a banquet thrown by the tribe, the Gold Bug and Gongson Seung goes to observe another tribe from atop a cliff. Gongson Seung questioned if the tribe were the 'thirty thousand lives' that Yongbi was supporting and the Gold Bug confirmed it was. In their ensuing conversation, it was also revealed that even though Yongbi was sending money to help the tribe, he was not doing it out of regret for slaughtering their families in the past. Yongbi does not care how the Gold Bug spent the money and or if it actually helped them or not, all he cares is that the money is being sent to them. Then the Gold Bug and Gongson Seung mused about how Yongbi was able to escape Yogok Gorge despite being separated from Biryong. The Gold Bug speculated that the reason Yongbi was helping the Horselords tribe is because their Prince was the one who saved Yongbi's life.
The Gold Bug noted that since it was not Yongbi's own will that kept him alive, he does not feel any responsibilities to help the Horselords and that the money he sent was only a minimum payment for letting him keep breathing. Furthermore the Gold Bug revealed that the tribe was even refusing to receive that minimum payment. Ultimately, he commented that Yongbi was the only one who hasn't been able to move on. However, the Gold Bug was intrigued in the direction Yongbi's life would take when the young's man will is rekindled.
Volume 15[]
At the entrance to the Muhae Valley, the Gold Bug questioned Bang Neungso's group of bandits and left after finding out that they knew nothing of what happened in the Muhae Valley but not before hypnotizing the bandits into giving him their belongings. As he was traveling, the Gold Bug suddenly noticed a messenger bird.
Meeting up with Yongbi later, Gold Bug asked what his plans were and the young man responded that he would keep his promise of presenting himself to the Red Bloods and to marry Biryong off (to Arong).
Yongbi the Invincible - A Side Story[]
Volume 1[]
The Gold Bug and Gongson Seung conversed on top of a cliff overlooking a forest. The Gold Bug ponders about how Yongbi was able to defeat the "Demon's Wrath"(or web of pursuit), noting that the assassin group was using this tactical maneuver offensively compared to the Red Bloods use on Cruel Moon Archdemon. He speculated that Yongbi was able to outmaneuver his enemies in the forest because of Biryong being a horse with a face of divinity that only appeared once in a hundred years and therefore possessed amazing memory and senses. Then Gongsong Seung received a report from their search party noting that they were still searching for Yongbi and that the forest was rather simple to navigate. Upon hearing this, the Gold Bug felt embarrassed for overthinking things and speculated that Yongbi could have simply defeated the Demons' Wrath with his martial arts prowess alone.
Volume 2[]
Later on his ship, the Gold Bug provided Yongbi with the documentation and Intel the young man requested. On the deck of the ship, Gongson Seung fed Biryong with meat laced with drugs, intending to obtain some of Briyong's seed with a decoy mare. Meanwhile, Yongbi wondered why it was so noisy on the deck and prepared to leave but the Gold Bug distracted him with a luxurious and hefty meal. Yongbi accepted the meal but found it strange that someone as stingy as the Gold Bug would provide such a meal free of charge. Later, Yongbi left with Biryong and the Gold Bug's servants informed thim that they failed to obtain Biryong's seed due to the horse's rampage, much to the Gold Bug's anger.
